Mary's Vision and Goals

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
~ Margaret Mead

I want to bring new energy and fresh vision to the Ventura Unified School Board to inspire, take action, and make a difference for public school children. Public education faces many challenges. Now, more than ever, we need fresh insights and ideas to deal with these many challenges and we need school boards that are willing to be strong representatives of public education in their communities.

I will continue to be a strong voice for public education because I believe that every child has the potential to lead an extraordinary life. By investing our time and energy in providing opportunity to children through quality public education now, we can create a better future for all.

"Mary Haffner has the qualifications to be an outstanding member of the Ventura Unified School Board. Through her volunteer work with the District, she has demonstrated that she can really get things accomplished. As a mother of two children in the public schools and as a member of the educational community, I plan to vote for Mary Haffner." ~ Mindy Lawrence, Parent and Educational Coordinator for the Ventura Hillsides Conservancy.

If elected, I will:

- Continue to build and foster community partnerships to maximize local funding for public education.

- Be a strong voice for the children, teachers and staff of the school district by advocating for education reform and full state funding.

Mary with VUSD Board President Debbie Golden.

- Continue to advocate for policies and programs that address issues such as nutrition, physical fitness, and the arts. My work with Ventura Unified’s Nutrition and Physical Fitness Task Force, Arts Advocacy Collaborative and IPM Committee, all demonstrate my commitment to addressing the intellectual, emotional, and physical well-being of children.

- Work closely with school district administration, teachers and staff to support programs that help children feel safer and more connected to their schools and community.

- Support the introduction of a curriculum that focuses on the environment, media-literacy, and social responsibility.

I want to inspire and impassion parents and community members to work together for the future of public education and our children.

School board members must also support teachers in every way possible, as the influence of teachers in our children’s lives is immeasurable. If elected, I will promote and support policies that address these important issues and I will be a highly visible and accessible voice for public education in our community.
